Pre-finishing Services

Flooring Pre-finish – Loba Invisible Finish (2K Invisible Protect) offers a sophisticated solution for preserving the natural beauty of solid wood and engineered floors while delivering high-performance protection. Its ultra-matte, water-based formula creates a virtually invisible layer that maintains the original color and texture of untreated wood, making it ideal for those seeking a raw, natural aesthetic. Despite its subtle appearance, the finish is highly durable—resistant to scratches, chemicals, and everyday wear and tear—thanks to its advanced two-component system (LOBA+1). It also boasts excellent slip resistance, low VOC emissions for healthier indoor air quality, and easy maintenance comparable to traditional finished surfaces. This combination of aesthetic preservation and robust protection makes Loba Invisible Finish a top choice for both residential and commercial flooring applications.

Exterior Siding Pre-finish

Sikkens ProLuxe and Vermont Natural Coatings are both premium choices for protecting and enhancing exterior siding, each offering distinct advantages. Sikkens ProLuxe is renowned for its exceptional durability and rich, translucent finish that highlights the natural grain of wood while providing long-lasting protection against UV rays and moisture. Its high-performance alkyd formula penetrates deeply, ensuring a resilient barrier that resists peeling and cracking. On the other hand, Vermont Natural Coatings offers an eco-friendly alternative, utilizing whey protein—a renewable resource—to create a low-VOC, non-toxic finish that’s safe for people, pets, and the planet. It delivers excellent water resistance and breathability, helping wood maintain its integrity over time. Whether you prioritize a luxurious, classic look or a sustainable, green solution, both products offer superior protection and beauty for your home’s exterior.

FAQ

Box Beam Fabrication
What different types of box beams do you offer?

Both reclaimed and new wood options are available. Within those two main categories there are several texture options. Hand-hewn / Rough Sawn / Planed Smooth / Resawn.

Where are box beams most often used?

They are primarily used as decorative ceiling beams Another application is to use a box beam to wrap LVL’s or steel columns. This requires precise interior dimensions so it can be installed correctly.

How do box beams compare in price to solid beams?

Many factors go into the cost of a box beam, dimensions, material selection, finish-work, and many more. However, a box beam is always more expensive than a solid beam. A box beam is constructed from a larger solid beam whose faces have been milled off to be used to build the new beam. The pieces have to be denailed, planed, lock mitered, glued up, and sanded to blend the seams. This creates extensive labor involved in crafting such a piece.

What are the advantages of box beams?

The main advantage of box beam is they are much lighter than solid beams making the installation process much easier and more efficient. Another benefit is you can create a variety of custom sizes. EK West has the ability to create 2 sided, 3 sided, and 4 sided beams to best fit your application.

Stair Tread Fabrication
What material options are available?

Our custom stair solutions are available in a variety of reclaimed or sustainably harvested woods, each option crafted to your specifications. Reclaimed clean face white oak is a popular option for open stair case or floating stair designs.

How are stair tread packages priced?

Pricing depends on the material selected and the specs of the order. All material is custom quoted by project, selected and made to order. We look forward to discussing your project.

How are stair treads constructed?

Many times our stair treads are a two-piece glue up to create the width needed. This design creates a very strong and durable tread that can withstand heavy use in both residential and commercial applications.

Why choose EK West Ventures for wood stair designs?

Our custom wood stair treads and risers complete the seamless transition from floor to stair, adding a cohesive look to your space. Whether you are renovating an existing staircase or constructing a new one, we provide customized craftsmanship that complements your flooring design, guaranteeing that every detail corresponds with your vision.

Custom Milled White Oak Timbers
What moisture are the timbers?

Many of our white oak timber packages are sold as “ semi air dried”. This creates a stable timber that avoids excessive movement. There will be some minor shrinkage and checking that occurs as the timber completely dries over time. Kiln drying is available to produce an even more stable timber. This comes with a lengthy lead time and additional cost.

What sizes are available?

We have the ability to supply a large range of sizes. These can range from a 4×4 all the way up to 12×14 timber. Lengths will depend on the size of the timber but the longest can be up to 30’ +.

Are there any custom milling options available?

Timbers can be S4S to a smooth, planed finish. This is especially helpful with kiln dried timbers to clean up any water surface stain marks. In addition, hogging out is available up to an 8” depth to reduce the weight of solid timbers.

Pre-finishing On Flooring
What is pre-finished hardwood flooring?

In short, prefinished hardwood flooring comes ready to install. The sanding, staining, and sealing is already completed.

What is involved in pre-finishing reclaimed flooring?

The first step is filling any major voids prior to applying the finish. This allows for a more even, consistent finish.

How long do prefinished floors last?

Most prefinished floors last 25 to 30 years.  Longevity depends on the wood species, the type of finish, and the level of maintenance.

Pre-finishing On Exterior Siding
What is pre-finishing siding?

At its core, prefinished siding is siding that’s already sealed before it ever reaches your home. Traditional siding requires on-site finishing, pre-finished siding is ready to go as soon as it’s unpacked. This eliminates the extra steps of sealing or staining after installation.

How long does the finish last?

The life expectancy of a finish depends on the environment and elements the siding is exposed to. The high transparency trans oxide pigments penetrate deeply into the wood, providing long-last protection against water damage, UV radiation, and mold. This allows the siding to age and weather gracefully. The average recoating time period is 7 to 10 years.

Is the sealer a safe product?

Yes, our exterior sealer is made from mostly natural ingredients containing low VOC’s.

Does the sealer change the look of the wood?

Our exterior grade matte sealer keeps the natural look of the siding with minimal change. It enhances the natural beauty of our reclaimed and natural siding materials. It penetrates deeply into the wood grain and fibers protecting from the inside out.
